Dignity collected from the forest
The Amazon population knows, as no one else does,
the importance of the vegetal extractive industry for its
economic development, for being in the heart of the
Amazon forest –considered, by many environmentalists,
the lungs of the world –their great majority respect the
fruits that the land provides them. Among them, there
are 254 members of Cooperativa Mista Agropecuária
de Manacapuru –Coomapem (Farm and Cattle Raising
Mixed Cooperative of Manacapuru).
Coomapem is the frst cooperative of Brazil to
receive the International Organic Certifcation, issued
by the French company, Ecocert. Its members live out
the harvest and trade of jute and mallow –native plants,
whose fbers (resistant) are used on the manufacture
of bags for grains, especially coffee. The work and the
income obtained from the business guarantee the
survival of these families, which, today, live with dignity,
even competing with the heavy market of synthetic
polypropylene fbers.
And, as they carry the DNA of cooperation, the
extractive industry members of Coomapem have also got
together to produce fruits and vegetables in subsistence
system. This is a lesson of citizenship and care towards
nature that deserves to be spread.

A população do Amazonas conhece como
ninguém a importância do extrativismo ve-
getal para seu desenvolvimento econômico.
Por estarem no coração da foresta amazôni-
ca – considerado por muitos ambientalistas o
pulmão do mundo – a imensa maioria deles
respeita os frutos que a terra lhe dá para vi-
ver. Dentre eles, os 254 associados da Coo-
perativa Mista Agropecuária de Manacapuru
(Coomapem).
A Coomapem foi a primeira cooperativa
do Brasil a receber a Certifcação Orgânica
Internacional, emitida pela empresa france-
sa Ecocert. Seus cooperados sobrevivem da
colheita e da comercialização da juta e da
malva – plantas nativas, cujas fbras (resis-
tentes) são utilizadas na fabricação dos sacos
que embalam grãos, especialmente o café. O
trabalho e a renda obtidos no negócio garan-
tem a sobrevivência dessas famílias que hoje
vivem com dignidade, mesmo concorrendo
com o pesado mercado de fbras sintéticas
de polipropileno.
E como carregam em si o DNA da coope-
ração, os extrativistas da Coomapem também
se uniram para produzir frutas e hortaliças
em sistema de subsistência. Uma lição de
cidadania e de cuidado com a natureza que
merece ser divulgada.
