Interesse pela comunidade
No interior do estado do Rio de Ja-
neiro, em um município com apenas 15
mil habitantes chamado Natividade, uma
cooperativa recém-criada está mudando
a realidade da região. Estamos falando
da “Bordados N’atividade”, formada por
50 mulheres que têm no trabalho manual
sua principal fonte de renda.
O bordado artesanal sempre fez
parte do dia a dia da comunidade. A
arte tem sido passada de mãe para
flha há muitos anos. Desde pequeni-
ninhas, elas aprendem com maestria
os pontos: cheio, corrente, haste, ma-
tiz, ponto folha, ponto caseado e “x”.
Tamanho saber artístico estava sendo
prejudicado pela baixa escolaridade
das cooperadas, que acabam venden-
do suas peças a preços abaixo da mé-
dia do mercado. A cooperativa sanou
essa defciência e, em pouco tempo,
posicionou as artesãs no mercado re-
gional e até de fora do Brasil. Os prin-
cipais mercados são: Rio de Janeiro,
Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina, Paraná,
e Bahia, além do Japão.
Mas a principal conquista da Bor-
dados N´atividade está relacionada à
autoestima das mulheres e à qualidade
de vida de suas famílias. Antes da co-
operativa, elas eram apenas donas de
casa, sem perspectiva. Hoje, muitas
delas se tornaram chefes de família. A
renda mensal obtida com o artesanato
– que antes girava em torno de R$ 80
por família – agora chega aos R$ 400.

Embroidering a better future
In the countryside of the state of Rio de Janeiro, in a mu-
nicipality called Natividade, with only 15 thousand inhabitants,
a recently created cooperative is changing the reality of the re-
gion. We are talking about “Bordados N’atividade” (N’atividade
Embroidering), formed by 50 women who have in their manual
work their main source of income.
Artisanal embroidering is always part of the community’s
daily life. This art has been being transmitted from mother to
daughter for many years. Since they are children they learn
the stitches: full, current, haste, color, leaf point, buttonhole,
and “x”. Such artistic knowledge was being harmed by the
members’ low education level, who ended up selling their
pieces at a price below the average of the market. The
cooperative solved this defciency, and in a short period of
time, placed the artisans in the regional market, and even
abroad. The main markets are: Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais,
Santa Catarina, Paraná, and Bahia, besides Japan.
But the most important achievement of Bordados
N´atividade is related to the women’s self-esteem and to their
families’ quality of life. Before the cooperative existence,
they were only housewives without perspectives; today many
of them have become the family breadwinner. The monthly
income obtained from the handicraft– that used to be around
R$ 80 per family – now gets to R$ 400.
