Cotton with an oriental touch
The oriental dream of planting cotton fostered the
cultivation of this plant in Naviraí, Mato Grosso do Sul. “The
Japanese think cotton is the most beautiful thing in world”,
says Gervário Kamitani, son of the founder of Cooperativa
Agrícola Sul Matogrossense – Copasul (Agricultural
Cooperative of the South of Mato Grosso), Sakai Kamitani.
When the cooperative’s founder arrived in Naviraí,
in 1962, followed by his friend, Susekada Takehara,
there were only thick woods in region. And, just like the
gaúchos grubbed up Mato Grosso, the Japanese broke
the woods in Mato Grosso do Sul.
After working hard in the harvest, in 1978, both
immigrants gathered a group of producers to found Copasul,
which, today, counts with 700 members. Famous for the
quality of the production, the cooperative has the capacity to
stock 290 thousand tons of cotton, and other products, such
as corn andmanioc. It also has a spinning mil that consumes
700 tons of plumes to produce 650 tons of threads per
month. The raw material comes from the properties of the
region, and also from Goiás, Mato Grosso, and Bahia.

O sonho oriental de plantar al-
godão impulsionou o cultivo dessa
planta em Naviraí, Mato Grosso do
Sul. “Japonês acha o algodão a coi-
sa mais linda do mundo”, diz Ger-
vário Kamitani, flho do fundador da
Cooperativa Agrícola Sul Matogros-
sense (Copasul), Sakai Kamitani.
Quando o fundador da coopera-
tiva chegou em Naviraí, em 1962,
acompanhado do amigo Susekada
Takehara, só existia mata fechada
na região. E, assim como os gaú-
chos desbravaram o Mato Grosso,
os japoneses abriram a mata no
Mato Grosso do Sul.
Após trabalharem intensamen-
te na lavoura, em 1978, os dois
imigrantes reuniram um grupo
de produtores para fundar a Co-
pasul, que hoje conta com 700
cooperados. Famosa pela qualida-
de da produção, a cooperativa tem
capacidade de armazenar 290 mil
toneladas de algodão e outros pro-
dutos, como milho e mandioca.
Ela também possui uma unidade
de fação, que consome 700 to-
neladas de pluma para fabricar
650 toneladas de fos por mês. A
matéria-prima vem das proprieda-
des da região e também, de Goiás,
Mato Grosso e Bahia.
