Da luz ao leite
From light to milk
The fame of Cersel’s products is known all over Rio Grande
do Norte. From its type C milk, to a diversity of yoghurt favors,
and cheese specialties, they invaded Rio Grande do Norte’s
families’ homes. This credibility mirrors the rigorous quality
standard of the cooperative, which is formed by four thousand
members, today.
But, here comes the question: what was the path taken by
Cersel’s members to get to this level? The beginning of this story
was not in the lacteous sector, but in the area of electricity. The frst
beneft generated by Cooperativa de Energia e Desenvolvimento
de Seridó –Cersel (Cooperative of Energy and Development of
Seridó-Cersel) was to “illuminate” the life of rural producers of
the surrounding area.
Cersel is located in the municipality of Currais Novos, and it
is one of the oldest cooperatives of the state. It started its activities
in 1972, bringing light to thousands of families in the countryside,
and contributing for the development of the region. In parallel
to that, they worked in other segments, such as supermarkets,
agricultural raw materials shops, and mechanized surveillance
service.
But, it is important to mention that its great effort has always
been on rural electrifcation. However, this reality changed
in 2002. With the raise of the tariff for the cooperatives of this
sector, the continuity of its operations was jeopardized. The way
out was to put its cards on new businesses’ opportunities, and
the members decided to invest on the most famous product of
Seridó: milk. Nowadays, all its line may be found on the main
supermarkets’ networks of Rio Grande do Norte

A fama dos produtos da Cersel é
conhecida em todo o Rio Grande do
Norte. Do leite tipo C, aos diversos sa-
bores de iogurte e às especialidades
de queijo, eles tomaram conta da casa
do povo potiguar. Essa credibilidade
espelha o rigoroso padrão de quali-
dade da cooperativa formada hoje por
quatro mil associados.
Mas aí vem a pergunta: qual o cami-
nho trilhado pelos cooperados da Cersel
para chegar a esse patamar? O início
dessa história não começou no setor de
lácteos, mas no campo da eletricidade.
O primeiro benefício gerado pela Coo-
perativa de Energia e Desenvolvimento
de Seridó (Cersel) foi “clarear” a vida
dos produtores rurais da redondeza.
Localizada no município de Currais
Novos, a Cersel é uma das mais anti-
gas cooperativas do estado. Ela iniciou
suas atividades em 1972, levando luz
para milhares de famílias no campo e
contribuindo para o desenvolvimento
da região. Paralelamente, trabalhava
em outros segmentos, como supermer-
cados, lojas de insumos agrícolas e ser-
viço de patrulha mecanizada.
Mas vale citar: seu grande foco
sempre foi a eletrifcação rural. No en-
tanto, essa realidade mudou em 2002.
Com o aumento da tarifa para as coo-
perativas do setor, a continuidade das
suas operações fcou comprometida. A
saída foi apostar em novas oportunida-
des de negócio, e os cooperados resol-
veram investir no produto mais famoso
do Seridó: o leite. Atualmente, toda
a sua linha pode ser encontrada nas
principais redes de supermercados do
Rio Grande do Norte.
