Technology that transforms lives
Amidst wooden sheds and lack of opportunity, a group of
youngsters from Pirambu shantytown – the seventh biggest in
Brazil – found in cooperativeness a way out to a better future.
Founded in 2006, Pirambu Digital was created by a group
of 52 youngsters from the community, who made a software
development course for free. The connection was immediate. As
soon as they had their frst contact with the internet and the digital
world, these young people noticed how important it was to replicate
the opportunity to the other residents of the shantytown. After all,
digital inclusion is (or at least it should be) everybody’s right.
Moved by the will of changing the neighborhood situation, the
group created a small structure to start the works. Provided with
some computers and an old air conditioner, they started to offer
their frst maintenance, support, and development of software
services not only to the community, but for the residents in
Fortaleza, the capital of Ceará.
“At the beginning, we were prejudiced upon for coming from
the shantytown”, admits Jocilda Ribeiro, one of the founders and
partner of Pirambu. “But we have won, and today we have a
portfolio of important clients in the state, including the city hall”.
Tecnologia que transforma vidas
Em meio a barracos de madeira e à falta de oportunidades, um grupo
de jovens da favela Pirambu – a sétima maior do Brasil – encontrou no
cooperativismo uma janela para um futuro melhor.
Fundada em 2006, a Pirambu Digital foi criada por um grupo de 52
jovens da comunidade, que fzeram um curso gratuito de desenvolvimen-
to de software. A conexão foi imediata. Ao terem o primeiro contato com
a internet e o mundo digital, esses jovens perceberam a importância de
replicar a oportunidade a outros moradores da favela. Afnal, a inclusão
digital é (ou pelo menos deveria ser) um direito de todos.
Movidos pela vontade de mudar a situação do bairro, o grupo montou
uma pequena estrutura para iniciar os trabalhos. Munidos de alguns com-
putadores e um velho ar-condicionado, começaram a oferecer os primei-
ros serviços de manutenção, suporte e desenvolvimento de softwares não
apenas à comunidade, mas aos moradores de Fortaleza, capital do Ceará.
“No início, sofríamos muito preconceito por sermos da favela”,
admite Jocilda Ribeiro, uma das sócio-fundadoras da Pirambu. “Mas
vencemos e, hoje, temos uma cartela de clientes importantes no es-
tado, inclusive a Prefeitura”.
