A vida no sertão é feita de privações e insistências,
como defniu o escritor Euclides da Cunha, no livro Os
Sertões. Mas um grupo de agricultores criou uma manei-
ra de sobreviver às provações e vencer as difculdades do
clima e do solo arenoso da região. Juntos, eles criaram
a Cooperativa de Crédito Rural do Semiárido da Bahia
(Sicoob-Copere), no município baiano de Valente – con-
siderado a capital mundial da fbra grossa (sisal), mate-
rial utilizado na confecção de cordas e tapetes.
A cooperativa surgiu há 20 anos, com o intuito de
melhorar economicamente a vida de famílias do municí-
pio e a garantir a expansão do agronegócio local. Ao dis-
seminar conceitos de educação fnanceira, sobre como
poupar e investir recursos, a Sicoob-Coopere conquistou
a confança da população. O número de cooperados su-
biu, em dez anos, de 20 para 8 mil. Já os depósitos
pularam de US$ 4 mil para US$ 3 milhões.
A cooperativa foi a primeira instituição fnanceira a
oferecer produtos até então inacessíveis aos pequenos
produtores da região, como cartão de crédito, talão de
cheques e seguro de veículos. História que confrma o
principal diferencial das cooperativas de crédito brasi-
leiras: elas estão onde o povo precisa.

Surprise in the semi-arid region
Life in the hinterland is made of privations and
insistences, as defned by the writer Euclides da Cunha,
in the book Os Sertões. But a group of farmers found a
way to survive the privations and overcome the diffculties
of the weather, and of the sandy soil of the region.
Together, they created Cooperativa de Crédito Rural do
Semiárido da Bahia – Sicoob-Copere (Credit Cooperative
of the Semi-arid Region of Bahia –Sicoob-Copere), in the
municipality of Valente, in Bahia – considered the world
capital of the thick fber called sisal, material used on the
confection of ropes and rugs.
The cooperative appeared 20 years ago, aiming
at economically improving the lives of the families in
that municipality, and guarantee the expansion of the
local agribusiness. As it disseminates the concepts of
fnancial education, about how to save money and invest
resources, Sicoob-Coopere conquered the trust of the
population. In ten years time, the number of members
increased from 20 to 8 thousand. The deposits went
from US$ 4 thousand to US$ 3 million.
The cooperative was the frst fnancial institution
to offer products that were until then inaccessible to
small producers of the region, such as credit card,
checkbooks, and vehicles insurance. This story confrms
the main differential of Brazilian credit cooperatives:
they are where people need them.
